How to Decorate a China Cabinet

There are as many ways to decorate a china cabinet as there are china patterns. So how to decorate a china cabinet can be a tricky question to ask. It all depends on what the cabinet is used for. China cabinets aren't just used for dinnerware anymore. You can also use a china cabinet to store curios and just general knickknacks. Let's look at the traditional china cabinet first.

If you're displaying china then you need a background to show off the design. This means you'll want to use some shelf paper on the back of the china cabinet.

Decorate

All you need to do is grab a utility knife and a roll of decorative shelf paper.

How to Decorate a China Cabinet

Unroll the shelf paper and stick it to the back of the cabinet. Use a plastic squeegee to remove any bubbles from the shelf paper. You can also use the tip of the utility knife to pop any stubborn bubbles that won't press out.

Now that you have a background color it's time to start stacking up the plates.

You'll need a few display racks so that you can stand the plates up on end with the face of the plate positioned towards the front of the cabinet.

There are plenty of different designs out there that will allow you to stack either a single row or do a cascade pattern along the back.

You can now build forward in the cabinet. Stack your heaviest items on the bottom shelves.

This will give a nice balanced look to the cabinets.

Another good idea is to stack like items together. Stack any plates that aren't displayed on top of one another, same with salad plates, saucers etc.

A good trick to prevent scratching the plate surface is to place a piece of tissue paper in between each plate.

If your cabinet has cup hooks in it then hang the tea and coffee cups from them. If not stack them up along the sides of the cabinet.

By stacking them along the sides you avoid creating a visual distraction in the middle of the cabinet.

Moving into the china cabinet drawers you'll want to keep all your silverware sorted.

This is a pretty easy task, just head to a department store and buy a silverware holder.

You'll want to keep everything separated from each other to avoid tarnishing.

Be sure to buy a silverware drawer that has a lid on it. This means less dust when you go to use it for Thanksgiving dinner.

Finally move to the bottom drawer of the cabinet. This is typically where all the weird shaped pieces go such as the gravy boat, carving boards, serving trays etc.

The best way to arrange all the odds and ends are based on usage.

Stack the least used items at the bottom of the cabinet and work your way up to the most often used.

These are just a few tips for figuring out how to decorate a china cabinet. Well displayed china can accent any dining room décor. A few simple tricks are all you need to set up a beautiful china cabinet.

How to Decorate a Trailer Home

Decorating a trailer home presents several challenges due to limited space and long & narrow dimensions. However the fact is that decorating a trailer home is no different than decorating a normal living place. With little creativity and innovation you can turn your space into a well decorated and stylish home. Below simple tips will help you make your trailer home look the best.

Exterior:

Decorate

The exterior will build the first impression. Paint outside of your trailer home, front porch and steps with nice colors. You can also use a small set of chairs and tables to add a welcoming look.

How to Decorate a Trailer Home

Do not forget to add lots of colorful plants on the deck area, near steps, on trailers etc. However you should be careful that you do not add too much flowers that overwhelm the place. Grow plants or use some colorful potted plants that do not grow too high.

Walls & Ceiling:

Choosing a color scheme for your trailer home is the most important concern. Using lighter colors makes interior look bigger. You can add some nice textures to the walls by using faux painting techniques. Paint dark panels as white. It is advised to give your ceiling white color as it will make your ceiling look at height.

Floors:

Consider renovating floors of your trailer home with light colors. You can use wood laminate in the floors of bedrooms and living room. You can also place some nice rugs matching your color scheme. Use large tile like laminate or wood tiles in the kitchen floor.

Windows & Curtains:

Use light curtains or stylish blinds that allow natural light enter your trailer home. You can make your window look longer by placing the curtain-rods above the actual window height.

Mirrors:

It is always a good idea to place mirrors opposite to window to make room look spacious.

Lighting System:

Use modern globes for holding light bulbs. It is better to use frosted bulbs that emit soft light. Make dark corners look cozy by placing table lamps.

Furniture:

Do not overwhelm your home with lots of heavy furniture as it will dominate the room. Use small and delicate furniture.

Storage System:

Using closet systems will give your trailer home a nice and tidy look. Place boxes under the bed as additional storage area. You can also get some old drawers, add wheels to it, cover with nice cloth and place it under your bed.

Rooms:

Use delicate and less furniture, stylish curtains, flower vases and modern rugs to make your room look great. Using round tables in living room and dining room will work best.

You can decorate living room by using narrow or sectional furniture and wall arts. You can also place a plush-love seat and a recliner. Hang one or two large art pieces on the wall.

Decorate your bedroom by adding nice hanging baskets from the ceiling. Using nice quilted bed sheet matching room's color theme will add more charm to the room. Place a nice rug in your bedroom. Use contemporary lamps and beautiful flower vase. In the dining room, use round dining table with a removable leaf and small chairs.

Bathroom:

Keep your bathroom simple and tidy. Use simple and light shower curtains. Do not use too much accessories and use decorative baskets and boxes for placing small toiletries. Place wash clothes and hand towels on the shelves.

Kitchen:

Use wooden flooring and light colors in the kitchen. Do not use too much accessories on the counter and use that space as storage area. Make sections inside cabinets by using static and hanging panels. Use small and simple lighting fixtures.

The degree of lighting in your store will vary depending on the mood you desire to create. For contemporary items, you will need ample of light. For vintage, lukewarm lighting works fine. Nautical Wall Decor - Creative Ideas For Nautical Wall Decor

When we read the word nautical wall decor, the first thing which comes to mind is water related scenes such as beaches, underwater tropical scenes, fish, starfish, ships, sailors. As a designer it is required by you that these things get incorporated into whatever space you are trying to decorate into various forms.

This does not mean that you should bring fish and boats into your home. You can create symbolic design features that will give an impression of a nautical life style. A country decorating style can be used to create scenes similar to the interiors of a big launch that is used to travel long distance sea travels.

Decor

Imagine the scene that you will be able to see from inside of a ship that is deep into the sea. You will see the ocean, seaboards, and palm tree avenues along the beaches. Such kind of visual effect can be easily created in your master bedroom using lighting effects or full size wallpapers.

Nautical Wall Decor - Creative Ideas For Nautical Wall Decor

The bottom line is to create an expressive environment that will remind the user of sea life. If you want to be more creative you can even use the double bed that represents a boat shaped container. Lighting fixtures can be of oriental style in the form of lanterns like they use on ships. You can even use a small hammock in a teenager's bedroom that will represent fishnet.

The color scheme you can use for nautical wall decor can be a combination of white, blue, and green to represent the natural colors. Wooden paneling on interior walls that can remind you of rustic cabin interiors of a beach house can create a dramatic effect. Thus nautical wall decor can be created using simple common sense ideas and can be affordable too.

Primitive Country Furniture and Decor

Primitive country furniture brings a harmonious balance into your home with the rest of your decor. These hand-crafted, rustic, and pre-aged furnishings provide warm and welcome comfort to your family and your visitors. For decades the cabin decor, Adirondack, and mountain lodge styles have been known as the least imposing and most comfortable styles available to the country decorator. Primitive country furniture will blend nicely with other similar decorating styles such as the ones listed above and even Arts and Crafts, Mission Movement, French Country and Craftsman furniture. Now, through the incomparable woodworkers of the Amish communities, you too can recreate the surroundings of the great outdoors in your own country home. Your furniture will be understated with simple classic lines.

Cloth and paint colors are neutral or in early Americana colors. The primitive furniture and pillows will be cozy and overstuffed. In the old days, many primitive country furnishings were made from twigs, branches and other natural elements - so look for earthy colors and uneven tones. Primitive country furniture series has tables, chairs, desks, armoires, nightstands, dressers, benches, beds, and thick wood coffee tables. You'll find them painted, raw, aged, or in artisan hand crafted, old fashioned, traditional designs. The primary feature of this style country furniture is the use of materials from reused pieces, barns, and posts. Planks are old, or fashioned to appear vintage or antique. Some primitive furniture has been created and decorated with bark, branches and twigs. Each log and twig is especially chosen for their shape and texture - right down to the decorative trim. The chunky wood styles of primitive country furniture lend themselves easily to armoires, wardrobes and big tables. Big chests and trunks also double as an innovative coffee table or bench for the foot of the bed.

Decor

In the double drawer wardrobe you'll find much more than a closet. Plain oval dining tables with benches make excellent primitive country dining sets. The wooden wall cupboards, wardrobes, plate racks, and hutches give your dining room a comfortable, country style. Or, place a rectangular work table in your kitchen, and use antique kitchenware for your cooking and serving - this brings back memories of an old farm house, doesn't it? Use traditional lighting and chandeliers for a truer experience - with those roughly finished cupboards and racks nearby the kitchen experience will be rustic, homey, warm. There are many different ways obtain primitive country furniture, and they aren't all expensive! Buying used furniture and roughing it up to age it, or overstuffing and recovering larger pieces are two easy and inexpensive alternatives.

Primitive Country Furniture and Decor

This repurposing of existing furniture is also good for the environment. Just because your existing piece of furniture isn't working for you today, doesn't mean that it can't be changed to work for you in the future. For instance, a friend of mine was given an ugly outdated, veneer covered entertainment unit. It was large and just what she needed for her dining room to display her plate collection and cookbooks. We spent 1/2 a day sanding, painting and aging the piece and today everyone asks where they can get primitive country pieces just like hers! Country decor is possible with all the rooms of your house. You can decorate your home wholly or partially in the country style.

So take a look at your existing furniture with a creative eye and consider some of the ways below to changing it to suit your style: Paint, then sand and stain. You won't believe how different a piece of furniture can look once sanded, painted and stained. You can even change the style of the piece. A cheap wooden Ikea table turned into a beautifl primitive country coffee table (years after use) with a thick application of crackle paint and whitewash finish. Outdated dressers can also change. Change the hardware. A few vintage, restoration or antique handles, hinges or pulls can turn a piece of wood furniture into a rustic masterpiece. Similar to painting, staining and sanding, old glass balls or brass handles add primitive to any previously country furnishing. One of my favorites is to re-upholster or re-cover a sofa, chair, loveseat or footstool. Thick primitive fabric is now easier to come by than ever before (or just look for muslin) to update a piece of furniture.

If you don't think you have the skill to re-upholster a piece, shop around for some country slipcovers - instant change. Buy antique or vintage pieces. Besides being environmentally friendly, those deals fit right into primitive country decor. Rather than spending 00 and more on a new couch or dining set, why not shop around for something similar, but gently used? Primitive country furniture is available at affordable prices and will lend that welcome air to any room of your home. Country decor reduces the modern air to most homes and apartments - enhancing the peaceful and authentic nature of your home and your family members.

Western Bathroom Decor Ideas

Often, the bathrooms in our homes get little or no consideration when it comes to decorating. That's too bad because there are plenty of western bathroom decor ideas that can make a big difference. After all, the bathroom is usually where we're at right before bedtime and where we spend time in the morning getting ready for the day. So, why not add a few decorative touches to remind us of something we have a fondness for?

Our favorite decor ideas for the bathroom are ones from the western, southwestern, lodge, and rustic styles of home decorating. For example, western style decor might include items related to western scenery or settings, cowboys and cowgirls, or horses, as well as rodeo and ranching activities. The Southwestern style might feature desert scenes, red rock canyons, cactus, or Native American designs. Nature and wildlife are common themes for the lodge and rustic styles.

Decor

Most of the things we use as part of our bathroom decor ideas are common items for the bathroom, but they're done in a certain decorative style. These common items include shower curtains, towel bars, robe hooks, tissue holders, soap dishes, lotion dispensers, toothbrush holders, waste cans, and so forth. There are also wallpaper borders, vanity lights, switch covers, along with cabinet pulls and knobs that are done in your favorite decorating style.

Western Bathroom Decor Ideas

If your home has more than one bathroom, you might have one for the master bedroom, one (or more) for the other bedrooms, and perhaps a guest bathroom or powder room. If that's the case, you might want to use one of the best bathroom decor ideas we know of - simply get a few items that reflect the hobbies and/or interests of the person(s) that uses each of the bathrooms the most. Then, decorate the guest bathroom or powder room to match or complement the rest of your home.

If you're a horse lover, you'll be able to find a wide variety of shower curtains with a horse theme. You can choose all kinds of scenes, from a horse grazing in a lush meadow to a group of wild mustangs running freely across the open range. You can easily find other bathroom accessories and accents that feature a design or depiction of a horse.

Are you a cowboy or cowgirl at heart? You can get a toothbrush holder, lotion dispenser, soap dish, and more, all with a matching design that features a depiction of a western character. Towel bars are available that make it seem like a pair of cowboys are holding a rope for you to drape your towel over. Some types of western light fixtures have a cowboy silhouette in metal art.

Perhaps you have a deep appreciation for nature and wildlife. You can express your feelings with rustic style bathroom accessories and accents that bring a touch of the outdoors into your room. Whether it's plant or animal, you'll have lots of choices. You can get decor items with designs or depictions of acorns, pine trees, pinecones, elk, deer, moose, bears, ducks, geese, or trout.

No matter which bathroom decor ideas have the most appeal for you, the best part is that getting a desired look or creating a theme is easily accomplished without spending lots of money. Most of the accessories and accents for the bathroom are affordable and have a very practical purpose, so why not get them in your favorite style? The difference it makes as you start your day can certainly make you glad you did!

Bedroom Wall Decor - Creative Bedroom Wall Decor Ideas

The interior decorating and decor of a bedroom largely depends upon it's function. There are mainly 4 types of bedrooms in a typical home plan.

1) Master Bedroom

Decor

2) Teenager Bedroom

Bedroom Wall Decor - Creative Bedroom Wall Decor Ideas

3) Kids Bedroom

4) Guest bedroom

All these bedrooms have their own decorating considerations. When it comes to wall decor for bedrooms many people think that either painting a wall or applying wallpaper on them is the only option available.

But these two techniques can be combined together for an altogether different look as well. It is not always necessary to apply the same paint to all the walls. Try finishing walls with contrasting colors or a combination of wallpaper and color on the same wall.

If your bedroom receives ample amount of direct sunlight, then you can very creatively make use of shadows for decorating purposes on wall. First observe the wall that receives direct sunlight and then you can "obstruct" the entry of sunlight using a mild steel grill or stained glass painting so that the wall receives interesting shadow patterns. The beauty of this is that since the direction and intensity of the sunlight changes constantly, you will have an ever changing wall decor piece made for you, free of cost.

Another idea is to instead of using picture frames on walls, how about painting the picture on the wall itself. Of course if you live in a rented house, you will have some limitations, but it can be done.

Another options for bedroom wall decor is faux finish plaster or even tile cladding using rectangular or square tiles. Even multicolored tiles can be used for the entire wall to create a mural of your choice. Thus a bedroom wall can be easily treated with little creativity for big results without spending big money.

When you invite guests to come to your home to share a meal with you, setting an attractive table is as important as serving good food. Your table setting is the first thing that your guests will see and can actually influence their appetites. This is why you should chose your setting carefully, based on whether the dinner is to be casual or elegant.

If you are having a formal dinner, then using a cream colored, linen tablecloth with matching cloth napkins is great for this type of dinner. You an accent it with a crystal or gold vase filled with flowers. Be sure to use a low vase, so that your guests' views of each other will not be blocked and you can use a large one for the center of the table and two small matching ones at the end. Candles also add a touch of elegance. Instead of using typical candle holders, considering using votives that you can set in bowls of water. Floating scented candles are another way to add grace and elegance to your table. If you prefer a modern type of elegance, then forget about using your grandmother's china and purchase some of the newer dinnerware that uses colorful geometric shapes.

Decorate

If you are having a casual dinner, then consider using brightly colored tablecloths and napkins. They add festiveness to the table and can be complimented with floral arrangements that match the colors that you use. You can buy utensils that have colored stems and glasses in colors to match. There are many casual place mats that are attractive and affordable. They will not only add a since of style to your place setting but will protect your table cloth as well.

How To Decorate Your Dinner Table In A Way To Impress Your Guests

Themed dinners such as those served at holiday time, can be especially fun to decorate for. There is lots of dinnerware and utensils that have holiday themes and you can even band miniature Christmas tree ornaments together to make attractive compliments to your table. Red and gold are great colors to use for these dinners and don't forget to break out the punch bowl for eggnog. If wine is going to be served, use crystal stemware.

How you serve the food is also important. You should have pitchers of water at each end of the table and serve the appetizers first. Once they have been eaten, clear the table to make room for the main dishes. Replace soiled napkins and refill the water pitchers.

Your desert should be as inviting as the main course. Consider peach cobbler or a chocolate layer cake. Always have a sugar free alternative in case one of your guests can not eat food that contains sugar.
Be attentive to your guests and engage them in conversation. Make them laugh and they will appreciate you even more.

Decorate Your Stairway For Christmas

It truly is the most wonderful time of the year! And decorating for the holidays can be a pleasure in itself. Your house can be alive with the holiday spirit without putting a huge dent in your time and budget.

It is helpful to simplify things. The tips offered here are fun and easy to do-you don't need to be a professional interior decorator to have a lovely holiday house!

Decorate

If you have a staircase or railing in your home or on the porch, it is easy to make it festive. Start by choosing fir garland. You can use real or fake, and there are upsides to both choices: the real thing has that Christmas tree pine smell that delights our senses, while the fake garland can be reused year after year, and doesn't pose a fire hazard.

Decorate Your Stairway For Christmas

Once your garland is hung at even gently curved intervals from the stair railing, you can add your own personal touch. Use the following suggestions to get your creative holiday juices flowing.

You may choose to string cranberries or popcorn as in the olden days. Or you can paint the edges of pine cones white to suggest snow (or leave them natural). Now add these winsome lovelies to your greenery by fastening with bright ribbons in white, green, red, blue, gold, or silver.

If an outlet is handy, string indoor/outdoor Christmas lights to your garland. Make sure they are cool-burning, and do not leave unattended when lit.

If your staircase or railing is long enough, you may want to hang Christmas wreaths at even intervals.

If you have a landing at the bottom or middle of your staircase, group poinsettias or small potted pine trees in a corner or two. Decorate with ornaments, ribbons, and bows. Or you can fill decorative baskets or containers with fragranced potpourri for an interesting display.

Experiment to see what works for you. Once your staircase or railing is pleasing to your eye, you know you are finished!

Rustic Decorating With Natural Wood

Rustic decor is as popular now as it has been for generations. Rustic style decor appeals to those who have a deep appreciation of the great outdoors and want to bring a feeling of this rugged beauty into their homes.

The most common theme found in rustic decorating is the use of natural wood. Some common types of wood that are found in rustic homes include Pine, Aspen, Oak and Maple. Two popular types of Pine used in wood paneling, furniture and fencing are Northern White Cedar and Western Red Cedar.

Decorating

Northern White Cedar is the lightest commercial wood in the U.S. Found in primarily in Southeastern Canada and Northeastern United States, this type of wood is naturally resistant to decay and insect infestation. It has an appealing creamy white color that will weather to a beautiful silvery gray if left untreated. It glues well, holds paint well and like all cedar wood, has a wonderful natural aroma. This makes Northern White Cedar an excellent choice for rustic diningroom, livingroom and bedroom furniture.

Rustic Decorating With Natural Wood

Western Red Cedar is another common wood used for rustic decor because of its beautiful natural red color and its resistance to weather. This makes it a great choice for garden furniture such as arbors and trellises. Like Northern White Cedar, Western Red Cedar is easy to work with and has one of the longest life spans of any North American softwood.

Aspen is another softwood known for its beautiful white color. Aspen is a popular wood used to make rustic decor such as picture frames, candle holders, mirror frames, wine racks and more. Quaking Aspen, the western species commonly found in the Rocky Mountains of North America is famous for the striking color change of it's leaves in the fall. Aspen trees grow in stands of clones, meaning they are genetically identical and share a common root system. They need full sunlight to thrive, making them intolerant to shade. Without the help of naturally occurring wildfires, Aspen stands have been on the decline. Forest fires, while unpopular with people, are important to the ecosystem. This is where careful, controlled harvesting of trees like Aspen can actually help restore the natural population in the absence of wildfires, which are hard to control.

Deformities on wood can actually enhance its appearance. This is the case with burl wood, a rare, highly sought after material for rustic furniture makers. Burl wood is formed by a growth commonly found on tree trunks, branches and roots that cause the grain to grow in a deformed way. Mold or insect infestations are the most common cause for this condition which is found on species such as Redwood, Spruce, Walnut and Maple. This deformity results in spectacular patterns that make unique and stunning rustic furniture.

No matter what type of wood one prefers, the natural beauty of wood never goes out of style. While natural wood is dominate in rustic decorating, it can be found in many other decorating styles as well.

Decorating With Wine Labels

Many people save the corks from a special bottle of wine to commemorate the occasion. Some people also like to save the bottles or at least the labels. You can actually get quite creative with wine labels. You can make coasters or a variety of small items using these labels or you can save them up or buy them online for a larger project. For example, you can create a unique bistro set by covering a round wooden table with them.

You can also copy wine labels or have them copied and printed on heavier paper to use on craft projects. You can come up with a variety of craft ideas using these labels with decoupage. You can also frame them and hang them on the wall. If you have collected the labels yourself for a period of time and from a variety of places, it is especially fun to get creative by using them all together in a collage or making several different crafts for a special area of your home.

Decorating

If you like to make gifts for others, using wine labels can be a great way to make unique gifts for wine enthusiasts. Decoupage them onto a keepsake box or cover a hat box with them for a special gift. There are literally hundreds of ideas you can use to create something special from these labels.

Decorating With Wine Labels

Use your imagination and see what you can come up with regarding decorating with wine labels. Whether you would like to turn them into wall paper or decorations to go on the walls, you are limited by only your imagination.

New Year's Eve Decorating

New Year's Eve Decorating Ideas

Enjoy your home decorating for New Year's Eve. Don't try to do too much. Keep in mind that people love to come to homes decked out in festive array but that it doesn't take a lot of cluttering ornamentation to create a joy filled room. Just a few large decorations can add the desired impact without taking a lot of time to set out. Plus, too many little decorations get lost when you have many people standing around.

Where to decorate for impact:

1. Your front walkway: Greet guests at the entrance with lights surrounding your front door and two large floral arrangements or evergreen trees.

2. Your front door: A large swag of evergreen decorated with nuts, apples, raffia, and ribbon spiced up with cinnamon sticks and cloves makes a different statement than the usual wreath.

3. Your dining table: If you plan a sit-down dinner, avoid tall centerpieces that interfere with guests seeing across the table. White table cloths reflect the light, add a feeling of elegance, and don't interfere with colored china. Bold colors add drama. Have fun with your table decorations.

4. Look up: Because table decorations get in the way, add decorations above archways and doors.

5. Your powder room: Because guests use this room privately, they take the time to look around and notice decorations.

If your TV looks like a black hole in your room when it's off, play an old black and white classic movie with the sound turned off.

Enjoy your New Year's Eve decorating this year. Try some new ideas and keep a party planner for next year. You'll be ready for new holiday decorating ideas!

Decorating Bushes With Outdoor Christmas Lights

Of course, we all think about decorating trees for Christmas. But what about the bushes? After all, it is common to have more bushes around your house than trees. Thankfully, many companies are thinking about the exact same thing. Companies are realizing more and more that people want to decorate and cover as much of the unsightly weather effects as possible.

Typically, a main reason to decorate in the winter is due to the brown vegetation. After all vegetation dies and turns brown, it is often covered by patchy bits of snow. That is followed by times where there is mud everywhere. Outdoor Christmas lights take care of many of the unsightly problems related to the wintertime blues.

Decorating

Types of Outdoor Christmas Lights for Bushes

Decorating Bushes With Outdoor Christmas Lights

In addition to a wide variety of colors, there are also different types of lights that you may find more appropriate than others. Of course, there are the type of lights that look like the kind you hang on that Christmas tree inside your home. Some people find that they're not as effective as others. Many people prefer rope lights because they did not get entangled in the bushes. Others prefer outdoor Christmas lights that are shaped into nets. They find them much easier to put on the bushes.

Types of Lights to Avoid

While everyone loves to experiment with creativity, there are certain lights that you should avoid using outdoors. Commonly, they are not outdoor Christmas lights at all. They are lights that are used for some other purpose. In particular, lights to avoid using in your bushes are:

o Strobe lights
o Regular light bulbs
o Lamps
o Indoor Christmas lights

What to Look For In Outdoor Christmas Lights

Typically, you'll be able to see right away if the lights are particularly outdoor Christmas lights. The next choice you will need to make is the brightness of the lights. This does not necessarily mean that larger lights burn brighter. When you are selecting your lights, pay attention to wattage. This will help to determine how bright the lights are. You can also have a timer or multifunction light programmer that will produce a desired effect.

The next choice will be the plastic that encases the electrical wires. For this choice, many people will
choose the color based on what they're using it for. If you're bushes are green, for example, you might want to use outdoor Christmas lights that have green plastic.

Decorating Christmas Cakes

When most people think of a Christmas cake, the Yule log comes to mind. The cake is often one of many desserts spread on the dinner table after a huge family meal. Lately, Christmas cakes have more often been decorated cakes, depicting a snowy scene, Santa, or a Christmas tree.

Over the past few years, cake decorating has become a widely recognized hobby and art form. Popular television shows have sparked increased interest in this art and have inspired people to take classes and start making cakes on their own instead of buying them.

Decorating

While the outside of the typical Christmas cake has evolved with the time, the same family favorites still lie on the inside of the cake. Today's cakes, while covered in buttercream or fondant, can even be flavored with mint flavoring oil for that seasonal flair.

Decorating Christmas Cakes

Your cake will come out much better if you plan out the design in advance. Draw a sketch to see how it will look and to get an idea of what colors look good together. If you have time, you can practice new cake decorating techniques in advance, but when it comes to a more complicated cake, you will need time for gum paste decorations to dry. Depending on the weather, some can take up to a week to harden. This also depends on how large your gum paste figure is.

If you don't want to get too complicated, here are a few ideas that are relatively simple. You can decorate any shape cake with Christmas presents made from gum paste. Just form a cube out of different colors of gum paste. Cut up thin strips of contrasting colors to attach to these cubes. Using a little gum glue to adhere them, lay these strips on the cubes in a criss cross pattern. You can even form a small bow for the top of the presents. For a Christmas tree cake, you can either buy the tree cake pan or carve the cake out of a sheet cake. Frost it in green and decorate with small candies.

Another simple idea is to make a Christmas holly cake. The green and red holly contrasts nicely with a simple white cake. To make the holly, you will need gum paste and a holly leaf cutter. Tint some gum paste a dark green, roll it out thin and cut the holly leaves. For each grouping of holly, you'll need three leaves. Dry the leaves on crumpled aluminum foil to give them a more natural shape. Tint gum paste red and roll three pea sized balls for each holly grouping. When all the gum paste decorations are dry, spray them with confectioner's lacquer. Arrange 3 leaves together so they fan out and place the berries in the center. Attach your gum paste leaves and berries with gum glue. You can either place several leaf groupings around the edge or create the entire edge of the cake out of holly.

To create a simple wintery scene, make white chocolate snowflakes to decorate the cake. Either draw or print out pictures of snowflakes, tape them down and tape plastic wrap over them. Pipe melted white chocolate using the #4 cake decorating tip and place them in the freezer for 5 minutes. Carefully peel them off the plastic. They can either lay flat on the cake or you can stick them into the icing and make them stand up.

Halloween Decorating Ideas - Vintage Halloween Decoration Ideas Inspired by the 1940's

Here are some ideas for Halloween decorations that can be used indoors or outdoors. Decorations like these were popular in the 1940's and many are still common-place today.

A traditional and easily prepared outdoor decoration is made of autumn leaves (real or fake) with corn stalks from your local farmer and lit Jack o'lanterns around the base. The corn stalks can be attached to a porch support beam, a light pole or a shepherds hook that held the summer's flowers.

Decorating

Another traditional Halloween decoration is the Jack o' lanterns. Put them in groups, line them up on a fence, porch railing, along a walkway or along a driveway. Candles, dishes of alcohol and salt were popular on Hallowe'en. Add blue Christmas lights to give a ghostly illumination.

Free hand silhouettes/cuttings of black and/or orange construction paper hung on the windows and walls make for a neat effect. Some items to draw include witches, pumpkins, cats, bats, elves, fairies, spiders, owls, cauldrons, broomsticks or peaked hats. Search the internet for figures you can print and trace. You can also create unique lamp shades for your Halloween party. Use stiff orange and black paper cut out like Jack-o'-lanterns, witches, cats and other popular Halloween symbols.

Popular decorations were created from various fruits and vegetables. Apples, turnips and carrots can be cut into grotesque faces and displayed as is or used to hold candlesticks. You can also create Halloween goblins from the fruit and vegetables. Use Jack o'lanterns for the heads. The body is a smaller pumpkin and carrots are used for arms and legs which are fastened to the body with wire.

What would Halloween be without ghosts? Use a Jack o'lantern for the head which is attached to an upright post. Drape a white sheet or tablecloth from the post. You can then pin/stake the ends of the sheet out a few feet or just allow the sheet to blow in the wind.

Whatever your taste in Halloween decorating is, you may find that some of these vintage halloween decorating ideas may be ideal for your own haunted home this Halloween.

Some Wonderful Christmas Decorating Ideas

Christmas can bring back a lot of wonderful memories. The holiday season is a very sentimental time that is often associated with the fine details in holiday décor. Many people capture wonderful memories of their childhood by incorporating rustic elements in their Christmas decorating ideas.

It can be challenging to find the right details to create a cozy feeling in your home during the holiday season. You need a bit of creativity and imagination when you come up with Christmas decorating ideas. Ordinary objects can be used to create an atmosphere reminiscent of a log cabin or a country farmhouse.

Decorating

This theme can be accomplished by using simple elements that bring the woods indoors. You can use pine cones and berries to adorn areas of the home. Fine details like birdhouses and wild animal ornaments can really bring the woods into your home.

Some Wonderful Christmas Decorating Ideas

My personal favorite is country inspired Christmas décor. There are many elements that can bring a traditional feel to your home. These Christmas decoration ideas can also incorporate Victorian items as well, giving the country decorations a classic mood. Small baskets, lace doilies, and glowing candles can help create a wonderful country Christmas.

You can also find ideas from quilters since they are very creative persons. Quilters can create items that are appropriate for the holiday season that can be displayed with pride. Christmas decorating ideas that use quilting supplies include ornaments made out of quilt blocks or Styrofoam balls covered with recycled materials.

You can discover your own ways of bringing rustic charm into your living space during Christmas. Food is one of the Christmas decorating ideas that are often overlooked. You can find old fashioned recipes to make snacks and beverages that can be part of your holiday décor as well. Gingerbread men and Eggnog served in decorative glasses are just two Christmas decorating ideas that incorporate food into your overall décor. Making use of simple details can help you create a traditional Christmas atmosphere in your home.

Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas: Trends for 2011

Everyone loves a Christmas tree, but sometimes you want a change. The same tree from year to year can get boring, and if you've changed your interior decor, you might find your old tree just doesn't have the same charm. So, how do you get a new look for this old tradition? Believe it or not there are trends from year to year. Here are some of the most interesting.

The Natural Look. If you're ready to replace your artificial tree with something new, why not try a flocked tree? These new trees are convincingly realistic, and since they already have a covering of snow, halve your decorating has been done for you. Finish them off with some more realistic touches, wrap the tree with a grapevine garland to add some bulk, add white and iridescent ball ornaments and if your tree is large, have them increase in size towards the bottom. If you want some color, add some red berry picks to the branches and add another touch of icy winter, crystal icicles dripping from the branches. For a little more color, add tiny birds. The result is very natural and realistic, and if you find it too 'cold' add some red ball ornaments in different sizes.

Decorating

The Beach Tree. If you like to escape the cold for the Holiday season there's no need to abandon tradition. You can decorate a tree for warmer climes. Once choice would be an artificial palm tree. These are available from the big DIY stores as well as online, and are a fun addition to your celebrations. They don't have many branches and so don't need a lot of decoration. If you are truly on the beach, why not gather some shells and transform them into ornaments with some wire and air dry clay. The final touch would be some spray glitter. If a palm tree is really not your style, but you're looking for something to match the cool color schemes used in many warm regions, why not choose a white tree? These can look stunning decorated in a color, so feel free to match your decor, blue and turquoise ornaments are very popular this year.

Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas: Trends for 2011

Think Pink. One of the most surprising trends to arise from the many new colors available, is the popularity of the pink Christmas tree. There are many forms to choose from, cupcake pink is a delicate shade and cries out for decoration in the 'ice cream' colors, in fact cupcakes and cones are a very popular theme in Christmas ornaments this year. You can also find cupcake garlands. Slightly more avant garde are the shocking pinks and pink/violet trees which have appeared in the last couple of year. Again Christmas ornaments seem to have been developed especially for them; you'll find handbags and high heels another popular theme this year.

The Christmas Tree is the focal point of your Christmas decor. Pick a new idea and enjoy!
